Longer auditor tenure boosts audit quality for most Indian firms.
The study looked at how the length of time auditors work with companies affects the quality of their audits in India. They found that, before mandatory rotations were introduced, longer auditor tenure generally improved audit quality. However, for companies that paid auditors very high fees, longer tenure actually decreased audit quality, especially if the company was part of a business group or had a CEO who also served as the board chair. This suggests that regulations limiting auditor tenure may only benefit a small group of companies, while for most companies, limiting auditor tenure could be harmful.
