Revolutionizing Drinking Water: New Solutions to Reverse Osmosis Membrane Fouling
Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes used for producing drinking water face challenges like fouling, which reduces their performance. Fouling can happen inside or outside the membrane and comes in different types like Biofouling, Organic Fouling, Inorganic Fouling, and Colloidal Fouling. The properties of the solution entering the membrane affect the type of fouling. To control fouling, various solutions like pre-treatment, membrane monitoring, cleaning, surface modification, and material addition have been discovered. Despite these solutions, RO membranes still face fouling issues and require more advanced control solutions.
