Potato Farmers Boost Yields and Profits with Innovative Mulching Techniques
In a study conducted in Nepal, scientists tested different materials to see which helped potato plants grow best from January to May 2020. They used silver plastic, black plastic, perforated black plastic, straw mulch, and no mulch. The best yield came from silver plastic (42.29 tons/ha), followed by perforated black plastic, black plastic, straw, and finally, the Control with the lowest yield. The scientists also found that mulching affected soil temperature, which was highest under black plastic and lowest without any mulch. When looking at the costs and benefits, silver plastic was the most cost-effective, followed by perforated black plastic, and the Control was the least cost-effective. Overall, silver plastic and perforated black plastic were found to be the best choices for growing more potatoes.
