Pandemic Cuts Emissions in US, China, and Africa, but Increases in EU
This study looks at how the Covid-19 pandemic affected pollution levels worldwide by reducing production due to job losses. By connecting CO2 emissions to production capacity, they predicted pollution would decrease. They first created a simple environmental model and tested it using real contamination data from different regions. The results show that countries like the USA, China, and Sub-Saharan Africa decreased their CO2 emissions during the pandemic, while the EU actually increased theirs. This shows that how countries are structured economically impacts how much their pollution levels change during a crisis like Covid-19.
