New weed control methods boost onion yield in Nigeria's Savannah fields.
The researchers studied how different plant populations and weed control methods affected onion growth in a field infested with chicken weed in Nigeria. They tested various combinations of plant numbers and weed treatments to see which ones worked best. Results showed that plant population didn't have a big impact, but using pendimethalin and fluazifop-p-butyl together gave the best weed control. Butachlor with 1 Hw caused the least damage to the crop. Pendimethalin and butachlor at specific rates led to taller plants, more leaves, and bigger onion bulbs. Overall, using pendimethalin and butachlor with 1 Hw at the right times was recommended for managing chicken weed in onion fields.
