Traditional red rice extract shows promise in fighting diabetes in rats.
Two traditional rice varieties, Beras merah and Beras hitam, were studied for their anti-diabetic effects on rats with high blood sugar. The bran extracts of these rice varieties were given to the rats for four weeks. The rats that received Beras merah extract at a higher dose showed the best anti-diabetic effects. Beras hitam extract also had some anti-diabetic properties, but not as strong as Beras merah. This suggests that Beras merah could be a good natural source of anti-diabetic agents.
