Banks adapt to low interest rates, maintain profits through market power.
The study looked at how changes in interest rates and the shape of the yield curve affected the profits of Dutch banks from 2008 to 2016. They found that when interest rates dropped and the yield curve flattened, banks made up for lost income by increasing other sources of profit, like market power and risk compensation. This allowed them to keep their overall profits stable even as interest rates changed.
