Urban trees thrive on compact soils, paving the way for greener cities!
Conifers like pitch pine, Austrian pine, and Norway spruce can grow in compact urban soils. Pitch pine is the best at growing in these conditions. Soil type and density affect how well the trees grow. Sandy soil at high density doesn't stop growth, but silt soil does. Roots have trouble growing in denser soil. Soil resistance is a better predictor of tree growth than density.
