The article examines changes in productivity in five provinces in Northwest China using the DEA-malmquist index method. The study found that productivity changes varied greatly among the provinces from 1979 to 2019. Ningxia, Gansu, and Qinghai had minimal contributions to economic growth. The sustainable development of these provinces requires addressing internal and external challenges.
