Loneliness and social exclusion dehumanize people, fueling rejection and isolation.
Dehumanization can happen in personal relationships, not just between groups fighting each other. When people feel distant from others, they may see them as less human than themselves, and this can hurt their closeness. Feeling left out can make someone see themselves and others as less human. Believing others think of you as less human can make you push them away. Having good interactions with others can lessen dehumanization. Feeling alone or connected can make people either see objects as human-like or people as less human.
