New research reveals how to improve wastewater treatment efficiency.
The researchers studied how bacteria in sewer water remove nitrate in the absence of oxygen. They tested different wastewater samples and found that the rate of nitrate removal ranged from 0.62 to 4.76 grams per cubic meter per hour. For nitrate concentrations of 2, 4, and 6 grams per cubic meter, the average removal rates were 1.70, 2.32, and 2.54 grams per cubic meter per hour, respectively.
