Consuming vegetables from oil-spilled areas in Nigeria may increase cancer risk
The study looked at the health risks of eating vegetables grown in an area with oil pollution in Nigeria. They tested for heavy metals in the soil and vegetables like Gongrenema latifolium, Ocimum gratissimum, Vernonia amygdalina, and Talinum triangulare. The results showed that the vegetables had safe levels of most heavy metals, but the soil was contaminated. Eating vegetables from the polluted area could increase the risk of cancer over time due to exposure to lead, cadmium, and chromium.
