Onion farmers in Ethiopia can save water and boost yields with simple irrigation and mulch techniques.
Water scarcity in the Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia limits crop production. A study was conducted to find the best way to grow onions using different irrigation levels and mulch. The experiment showed that using 75% of the recommended irrigation level with mulch resulted in the highest onion yield. This method also improved water use efficiency without significantly reducing the yield. Therefore, using 75% of the recommended irrigation level with conventional furrow irrigation and mulch can save water, increase productivity, and be a promising solution for water conservation in onion farming.
