New multiplayer game reveals how social hierarchy shapes group dynamics.
The game Trust-ya was created to study how people form social hierarchies in groups. Players invest in each other and gamble for payoffs, with bigger gambles leading to bigger rewards. A natural leader emerges who shares winnings to keep investors interested, but also wants to keep as much for themselves. The game includes "status symbols" for communication. Through experiments, it was shown that Trust-ya can be used to understand status dynamics in human groups.
