Intercropping Maize with Cowpea or Soybean Boosts Yields, Improves Food Security
Maize grain yield was studied when intercropped with three legume crops at different sowing dates. The results showed that intercropping reduced the growth of all crops, but maize plant height increased when intercropped with legumes at the same time. Maize grain yield was significantly affected by intercropped crops and sowing dates, with the highest yield when intercropped with soybean sown 5 weeks after maize. Intercropping with cowpea at the same time also increased grain yield. Overall, intercropping maize with cowpea or soybean can benefit the growth and yield of both crops.
