Oil-Rich Niger Delta Poised for Geothermal Energy Boom, Unlocking Sustainable Development
The researchers analyzed geothermal gradients in the Eastern Niger Delta basin using borehole temperature data from three oil fields. They found varying geothermal gradients across the fields, with average values of 17.3⁰C/Km, 22.6⁰C/Km, and 23.1⁰C/Km. These differences are due to different types of rocks and how sedimentation occurred in the basin over time. The moderate geothermal gradients in the area may explain why there is more oil than gas in the region.
