Reduced nitrogen boosts maize yield and soil health in drylands.
Reducing nitrogen application in spring maize farming in Weibei dryland can increase yield and nitrogen efficiency. A study conducted from 2016 to 2019 in Heyang County, Shaanxi, found that using 150-180 kg of nitrogen per hectare resulted in higher maize yield and improved nitrogen utilization compared to the commonly used rate of 360 kg per hectare. This lower nitrogen application also led to increased recovery efficiency and productivity. However, applying more than 180 kg of nitrogen can lead to excess soil nitrate, risking leaching. The study recommends 150-180 kg of nitrogen per hectare as the optimal rate for spring maize in Weibei dryland.
