Innovative tech boosts Kyoto Protocol's greenhouse gas reduction, unlocking open innovation's climate change mitigation potential.
Technological innovation plays a crucial role in making the Kyoto Protocol more effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers looked at patent data from 54 countries between 1990 and 2015 to see if innovation helps cut emissions and works well with the Kyoto Protocol. They found that inventions related to buildings and making products are linked to lower emissions. Also, being part of the Kyoto Protocol for a long time boosts the impact of innovation on reducing emissions. This study shows how innovation can strengthen global efforts to tackle climate change by improving international agreements like the Kyoto Protocol and by encouraging open collaboration on new ideas.
