Media headlines shape public opinion and perpetuate biases, study reveals.
The study analyzed news headlines from online portals in the Philippines to understand how they use language to grab readers' attention and convey certain beliefs. By examining 30 headlines, the researchers identified ten techniques used by media practitioners to attract readers. They found that these techniques often reflect the biases and ideologies of the writers or editors, who may present information in a neutral, biased, or misleading way. The choice of words in headlines also reveals the political leanings of the news practitioners, as they select stories that evoke strong emotions in readers.
