Ancient Chinese dynasties linked to changing monsoon patterns in new study.
The study looked at sediment in the South Yellow Sea to understand changes in monsoon patterns over the past 6,000 years. They found that both the East Asian summer and winter monsoons have weakened over time, with an overall opposite relationship. When the monsoons are positively correlated, ancient Chinese dynasties tend to rise or fall. However, when solar radiation weakens, the correlation between the monsoons is also weakened, with the North Atlantic Oscillation playing a role.
