The European Union is working towards creating a single currency called the European Monetary Union. Some countries are facing challenges in joining this union, but progress is being made. Despite recent issues in the European Monetary System, the Maastricht Treaty was successfully ratified in 1993. It is clear that some countries will be ready for the Monetary Union before others.
