Novel wetland system turns shower water into urban greenery irrigation gold.
Urban areas need more green spaces to combat climate change, but this requires more water for irrigation. Greywater (from showers and sinks) can be treated and reused for this purpose. A new type of constructed wetland was tested for treating light greywater and using it for urban greenery. The wetland was made of two compartments filled with special sand. It effectively removed solids and met irrigation standards. Mixing treated greywater with rainwater can further improve its quality. The wetland also removed pollutants like COD and phosphorus, making it a promising option for greywater treatment in cities. Overall, this design can help cities become more resilient by providing a sustainable water reuse solution.
