Drought-prone districts in Tamil Nadu find new crop solutions.
The study analyzed rainfall data from 1911 to 2010 in three districts of Tamil Nadu to suggest suitable crops for dry land areas. Different methods were used to determine the length of the growing period and identify crops that require less water. For Dharmapuri, maize, ragi, and a mix of sorghum, red gram, and mochai were recommended. In Tirunelveli, pulses and minor millets were suggested due to lower water needs. Villupuram was advised to grow groundnut, sesame, maize, varagu, and soybean instead of cotton. The research aimed to help farmers plan their crops better based on the rainfall patterns in their area.
