New cover crop mix boosts soybean yield in organic farming.
Cover crop no tillage can improve soil quality in organic farming, but it's hard for farmers to control weeds without tilling or herbicides. A study in France compared different cover crops for soybean production. They found that a mix of rye and triticale as a cover crop reduced weeds better than pure rye or triticale. The mix also led to similar soybean yields as pure rye, which were higher than with triticale. This shows that using a mix of cereal grains as a cover crop can help organic farmers practice no tillage while maintaining good weed control and crop yields.
