Steel beam-column connections under extreme loads: New findings revolutionize construction safety.
Steel structures are commonly used in construction for their strength and durability. However, welding connections in these structures can have weak points due to imperfections. This study tested different welded beam-column connections under extreme loads. Nine samples were tested, and data on force-displacement curves and energy absorption were collected. Fractographic examination showed damage on the samples after testing. Finite element analysis was used to simulate fracture behavior. The materials were modeled with elasto-plastic behavior and a fracture model was used to reveal the onset of damage.
