The international monetary system changed after the Bretton Woods system ended. The US dollar was central, but in the 1970s, the US had financial problems and stopped linking the dollar to gold. Other countries also stopped pegging their currencies to the US dollar. This led to a shift in the global monetary order towards multipolarity.
