Drip irrigation boosts maize yields, slashes water use in Ethiopia
The researchers wanted to study how different irrigation methods affect water use efficiency and the economics of growing maize in Ethiopia. They conducted an experiment using drip and furrow irrigation at varying water levels on maize crops. They found that using drip irrigation with 100% of the recommended water amount was the most effective in terms of water use efficiency. Maize plants under this method produced 2.38 kilograms of maize per cubic meter of water used. On the other hand, traditional furrow irrigation with the same water amount was less efficient, yielding only 0.60 kilograms of maize per cubic meter of water. Therefore, for growing maize in this area, using drip irrigation with the recommended water level is recommended for the best results.
