Intercropping soybean and maize boosts yields and water efficiency in agriculture.
Different irrigation treatments and intercropping patterns were studied to see their effects on soybean and maize yield. The researchers found that using irrigation at 1.2 evaporation pan coefficient resulted in the highest yields for both crops. Maize yield was best under the intercropping pattern of 1.2 alternated rows of soybean and maize, while soybean yield was highest under the pattern of 2:1 alternated rows. The intercropping pattern of 1:2 soybean/maize showed the highest water use efficiency. Overall, combining specific irrigation levels with certain intercropping patterns can significantly impact crop yields and water use efficiency.
