New Study Reveals Varying Plant Diversity in Cameroon's Community Forests
The researchers studied the plant life in two community forests in Cameroon to understand their diversity and structure. They used transects and plots to count and identify trees, finding a total of 7817 plants with a diameter of 10cm or more. One forest had 4108 trees belonging to 156 species, while the other had 3708 trees of 149 species. The most common plant families were Fabaceae, Malvaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Rubiaceae, with species like Drypetes sp, Annonidium manii, and Funtumia africana being dominant. One forest had higher diversity (Shannon index of 3.6) compared to the other (Shannon index of 3.41).
