Zero tillage boosts wheat yield by 20%, revolutionizing farming in West Bengal.
Farmers in West Bengal compared traditional and zero tillage methods for growing wheat over 7 years. Zero tillage increased wheat yield by 20.7% and net returns by 9,523/ha compared to traditional tillage. It also improved nutrient uptake by 16-19.1%. The number of spikes per square meter was the most important factor affecting wheat yield. Different wheat cultivars performed best with specific planting dates and tillage methods. 'K 9107' and 'PBW 343' were the most stable cultivars across tillage options. 'Swarna (L)' and 'K 9107' were the best for late planting conditions.
