Shield-tunnel ring joints can now withstand infinite bending, revolutionizing tunnel construction.
The study looked at how shield-tunnel ring joints bend when subjected to different internal forces. They found that the bending stiffness of the joints changes depending on the type of force applied. In a pure bending state, the stiffness stays the same, but it can increase significantly under compression-bending. However, under tension-bending, the stiffness is limited to lower values. The researchers used analytical expressions and computer simulations to confirm their findings.
