Saudi Arabia's Fossil Fuel Addiction Fuels Alarming CO2 Surge, Threatening Climate Goals
Saudi Arabia is producing a lot of electricity, which is causing a rise in carbon dioxide emissions. The country has a huge electricity system, with a peak demand of 61.7 gigawatts in 2018. Carbon dioxide emissions have been increasing rapidly since the 1990s, reaching about 530 million metric tons in 2020. Most of these emissions come from burning fossil fuels to generate electricity. Saudi Arabia wants to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by switching to cleaner energy sources like solar and wind power to meet its 2030 goals and commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change.
