Hydrologists studied changes in water flow in a river in north China over different time periods. They used a model to predict how human activities affect flooding. They found that as people changed the environment, the model became less accurate at predicting water flow. The river had less water flow during times of intense human activity compared to natural periods. This shows the importance of improving flood predictions in changing environments.
