New solar windows could slash energy bills and boost natural light.
Semi-transparent solar panels can be added to office building windows to generate electricity while still letting in natural light. Researchers studied different types of solar panels and how changing the amount of solar panel coverage on the windows affects energy performance. They found that having around 90% of the upper window section covered with solar panels can meet the room's lighting needs. More solar panel coverage increases lighting loads, while less coverage doesn't improve energy performance much. Overall, integrating semi-transparent solar panels into building facades can improve energy efficiency by providing daylight benefits.
