Uncovering Soil Phenoforms: A Game-Changer for Sustainable Development Goals
The article discusses how human activities are changing soil, leading to two main types of soil variations: genoforms and phenoforms. Genoforms are permanent soil types, while phenoforms are reversible variations caused by different soil management practices. Current soil mapping methods focus on genoforms, but phenoforms also play a crucial role in soil functions. Digital soil mapping can help identify and map these phenoforms, which can improve soil classification and management. This research suggests that some soil types should be split into multiple categories, and dynamic phenoforms should be included in soil classification systems. Identifying and mapping phenoforms in soil surveys is a key challenge for sustainable soil management.
