Fertilizer prices hinder food production in sub-Saharan Africa, study finds.
Crop yields in sub-Saharan Africa could be much higher, but farmers may not find it profitable to increase them. By studying maize yields and fertilizer use, researchers found that while yields could be doubled, economic incentives to do so are weak due to high fertilizer and grain prices. To improve food production, farmers may need to focus on improving soil fertility and targeting fertilizer use more effectively.
