Korea's New Cultural Heritage Laws Expand Protection and Transmission Systems
The Republic of Korea updated its laws to better protect intangible cultural heritage, aligning with the UNESCO Convention. The new Intangible Cultural Heritage Act broadened the definition of heritage, focused on changing traditions, and diversified heritage designations. While progress has been made, improvements are still needed. Suggestions include involving communities more, considering Sustainable Development Goals, taking a more inclusive approach to heritage designations, and increasing awareness and capacity-building efforts.
