Fungus Unlocks Powerful Enzyme to Rapidly Degrade Toxic Pollutant Hydroquinone
A fungus called Trichoderma harzianum S7113 was found to produce a lot of laccase, an enzyme that can break down harmful chemicals. By testing different conditions, researchers discovered that the best mix of ingredients for laccase production is glucose, beef extract, and ammonium chloride. They also found that the fungus can break down a chemical called hydroquinone very effectively when laccase levels are high. This study shows how to make the fungus produce more laccase and use it to clean up pollutants.
