C60-infused materials unlock potential for high-density hydrogen storage.
The scientists studied how adding C60 to certain metal-organic framework materials can improve their ability to store hydrogen gas. By using computer simulations, they found that C60 helps balance the amount of hydrogen that can be stored by weight and volume in these materials. The C60-infused IRMOFs showed better hydrogen storage capacity at different temperatures, coming close to meeting the Department of Energy's targets for hydrogen storage. Among the materials tested, C60@MOF-650 and C60@IRMOF-10 performed the best for storing hydrogen gas.
