Gold mining threatens groundwater supply in Ivory Coast, study finds.
The study looked at how mining affects groundwater in the Yaoure Gold Project area. They used remote sensing to map fractures in the aquifer, measured water levels, and analyzed pumping tests. Results showed 170 lineaments in the area, with water recharge of 46.5 mm/year and discharge zones in the north-east and south. Water flows mainly west-east and could end up in the Bandama River. The aquifer's transmissivity values ranged from 1.85.10^-6 to 3.5.10^-4 m^2/s, indicating pumping may affect water levels. Hydraulic conductivities varied between 1.23.10^-7 and 1.32.10^-5 m/s, with an average of 3.37.10^-6 m/s. Specific flow rates ranged from 0.05 to 3.6 m^3/h/m, with an average of 0.61 m^3/h/m.
