New cowpea study reveals key traits for higher seed yield
The study looked at different types of cowpea plants to see how they vary in seed production. They found that certain traits like plant height, number of pods, and seed yield are highly influenced by genetics. These traits can be improved through selective breeding. Some traits, like days to maturity and tannin content, are also influenced by genetics but to a lesser extent. The number of pods, plant height, and pod length are closely related to seed yield. The number of pods per plant has the biggest direct impact on seed yield, followed by pod length and test weight. Other factors like number of branches and pod length also indirectly affect seed yield.
