Imagining the future reduces impulsive decisions in adolescents and adults
Cueing people to think about their future can help them make better decisions about waiting for rewards. In one study, children were not affected by this cue, but teenagers and adults were. When teenagers and adults thought about their own future, they were more willing to wait for bigger rewards instead of choosing smaller rewards right away. This didn't change how connected they felt to their future selves or how close future events seemed to them. So, thinking about the future can help older people make smarter choices about waiting for rewards.
