Climate change driving rapid vegetation shifts in Mongolian Plateau transition zone.
Vegetation in arid and semi-arid areas changes with climate. A study looked at how greenness in the Mongolian Plateau changed from 1982 to 2015. They found that greenness increased from west to east, and moved between desert and grassland over time. Greenness was linked to rainfall and temperature, with more rain making plants greener. Rainfall affected greenness more in the east-west direction, while temperature had a bigger impact north-south. Overall, rain was the main factor driving changes in greenness in this region.
