Over-reliance on groundwater in California threatens water supply and ecosystems.
Groundwater in California is being overused and polluted, causing environmental, health, and economic problems. By analyzing data from 56 areas in California, researchers found that reducing water use in Central and Southern California could help decrease groundwater extraction. Changes in water deliveries from major projects also impact groundwater levels. This study provides insights into managing groundwater resources in California and other regions facing similar challenges.
