Boosting maize production in rainfed fields with innovative strip cropping!
Strip cropping and monoculture patterns were studied for maize development on rainfed rice fields in South Sulawesi. Different dual cropping patterns were tested, including maize with peanuts, mung beans, soybeans, and sweet potatoes. The Land Equivalence Ratio (LER) was used to assess the profitability of these patterns. Maize strip cropping with peanuts had the highest LER value of 1.38, indicating it was the most profitable, while maize strip cropping with mung beans had the lowest LER value of 0.75. This study shows that strip cropping can be a profitable method for increasing maize production in rainfed lowland areas.
