Homemade Rainwater Harvesting Traps Rural South Africans in Poverty
In rural South Africa, most homes don't have regular rainwater harvesting systems. Instead, many families use DIY methods, like homemade gutters and drums, to collect rainwater. A study in KwaZulu-Natal found that factors like higher income, brick houses with straight gutters, and good water services make it easier for families to use proper rainwater systems. On the other hand, homes with only round huts are more likely to rely on makeshift methods. This shows that the type of housing plays a big role in deciding how people harvest rainwater. If we want to encourage more widespread rainwater harvesting in rural areas, it's important to think about the different types of homes people live in.
