Farmers in China prioritize equality over security in land rights.
Farmers in Southeast China prefer equal distribution of land rights over secure tenure, according to a study on land reforms. The research compared farmers' preferences for efficiency and fairness in reallocating farmland and forest shares. Results from surveys and games with 222 households show that farmers prioritize equality in both types of land reallocations. Prosocial motivations influence farmers' preferences, with higher costs leading to a stronger preference for tenure security in farmland reallocations. The study highlights the impact of prosocial factors on farmers' land rights preferences, showing that preferences can vary between agriculture and forestry land uses.
