Central bank asset purchases reduce lending, stock returns for deposit-reliant banks.
Banks in the Euro Area reduce lending to businesses more when they are heavily involved in central banks' asset-purchase programs. This happens because when interest rates are very low, banks can't lower deposit rates further, leading to reduced profits. Banks with higher funding costs and more exposure to asset purchases lend less to companies, have lower stock returns, and shift their interbank lending to riskier countries.
