Xerophytic shrubs' growth rate boosted by specific leaf traits, study finds.
Xerophytic shrubs have different traits that affect how fast they grow in dry environments. Researchers studied eight shrubs for three years and found that the traits that help shrubs grow change as they get older. In the first year, shrubs with higher assimilation rates grow faster, but in the second year, shrubs with bigger leaves grow faster. Overall, the traits that affect growth the most are assimilation rate and leaf size.
