Revolutionizing irrigation: Accurate forecasts to optimize water use in California
The goal of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of forecast reference evapotranspiration (FRET) models for different microclimate regions in California. The researchers compared FRET ETo forecasts with observed ETo values from the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS) during the peak irrigation water demand period of 2019. They found that FRET forecasts matched well with measured weather variables like maximum and minimum air temperature, dew point temperature, and wind speed. However, the accuracy was lower for solar radiation predictions. This research shows that FRET can provide timely information for water management and irrigation scheduling in California.
